PCACC is dedicated to preventing child abuse and neglect in all its forms.

Goals

  • Increase partnerships for providing children, families, and the community with strategies to prevent child abuse.
  • Support, strengthen, and empower parents and caregivers to create a healthy and nurturing environment for children.
  • Provide primary prevention awareness and activities for all parents because child abuse and neglect happens in all segments of our communities, including all income levels, geographic regions, ethnic and cultural backgrounds and those with special needs.
  • Motivate and enable positive changes in individual behavior.
  • Effectively involve the community in our issue for the long term.

Preventing Shaken Baby Syndrome

PCACC and our prevention partners have been trained in providing skills to prevent the most deadly form of child abuse, Shaken Baby Syndrome.

This interactive training is designed to help parents, caregivers, and adolescents cope with the frustrations of caring for a crying child, and introduce effective stress and anger management techniques. The training describes the dangers and consequences of shaking a young child. It is also designed to enhance nurturing skills by helping caregivers recognize crying and behavior cues of young children. Caregivers can learn:

  • To define and identify causes of Shaken Baby Syndrome
  • To identify those at risk of shaking infants and children
  • To understand physical injuries associated with Shaken Baby Syndrome
  • Ways to cope with the frustration of caring for a crying child

Strengthening Families Parent Workshops

Being a parent is one of the most difficult jobs there is, but raising healthy, well-functioning children is one of the greatest contributions a parent can make to society. Parenting is a learned process which results from a combination of having a positive role model for parenting, having strong support in the learning process, and access to accurate, helpful information.

Qualified professionals lead workshops in a variety of topics from parenting toddlers, teens, or children with special needs to foster care issues, the power of involved fathers, understanding grief and loss and taking care of you as a parent.

Learning new skills and resources can boost parents’ confidence and improve relationships with their children. Workshops are offered at no charge to families of children ages birth to 18. Children’s workshops and a light meal are often provided. Most courses count as training hours for foster care and other services.

“I used to think it was all about getting my child to behave. Now I realize it’s about helping her learn to express and handle her own feelings.” - Parent

The Strengthening Families approach builds five Protective Factors in families:

Nurturing & Attachment
Developing a bond of strong, warm feelings with my child

Knowledge of Parenting and Child Development
Understanding how children grow and develop and applying effective, nonviolent discipline techniques appropriate to my child’s age and level of development

Parental Resilience
Gaining an awareness of my own challenges in parenting and learning ways to handle everyday stressors and recover from an occasional crisis

Social Connections
Feeling encouraged and supported in facing the daily challenges of raising a family

Concrete Supports
Learning about community resources like child care, health care, education, counseling, housing, or food that help me ensure the health and well being of my child

Local Sponsorships

PCACC provides sponsorship or mini-grants to support programs and events that address our mission and strategic plan. In the past, we have supported two Calaveras County children’s events that engaged families with fun, quality activities, resources and entertainment. The Optimist Club Kids’ Day, held in June, and The Resource Connection Children’s Fair in April are not to be missed!

Safely Surrendered Baby Law

No one ever has to abandon a baby again. There is an option. California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law allows a parent or anyone authorized by a parent to confidentially surrender an infant, within three days of birth, to a worker at any hospital or designated fire station rather than abandoning them in an unsafe location. The law guarantees anonymity and freedom from prosecution if there are no signs of abuse or neglect.

If a baby is safely surrendered:

    • No one will know. You don’t have to give your name.
    • You have 3 days (72 hours) to make this choice.
    • You have 14 days if you want your baby back.
    • You will not be arrested for abandonment.
    • The baby will be placed in a foster or pre-adoptive home.

No shame. No blame. No names.
